    Ughh the skyper. The worst.

One of my biggest tips would be to allow yourself time to soak things in. Instead of living by a checklist, I usually write down the experiences/places I won’t compromise on and go from there. Some of my fondest memories from study abroad/traveling are lounging in a park with a baguette and bottle of wine and people watching with friends. Don’t get too bogged down with trying to see everything and then missing out on the culture around you.

I’m going to be honest, everyone praises my French at my school but Damon, your French is legit amazing. How much longer do you think it’ll be until I get there? I’ve been studying for about three years and a half years

I completely agree with number 1!! I documented things on a weebly blog when I was studying abroad, which was great because my family and friends could read about what I’d been doing every day. That meant that they didn’t worry about me so I didn’t have to constantly Skype them, which would’ve definitely made me homesick eventually. Also now that I’m home I have detailed descriptions and photos of everything that happened every day, so I’m turning the blog posts into a scrapbook!!

I’m currently on exchange in Manchester, I’m from Australia so its pretty far away from home, and your tips were EXACTLY what I needed to hear! Thanks so much!! 🙂 #doeverything

@John Lock I can’t speak for Australians, but in Europe we have the Erasmus programme that – from my understanding – is different from the American Study Abroad in that you don’t do it just” for the language/culture. Like, you go abroad and take regular classes in your major, just at a different university (that is maybe more prestigious than yours, or offers different classes or whatnot). Sure, there still is the cultural element of being immersed in a different culture, but it’s not the sole purpose of the trip. Also bc our school system is different, and you couldn’t get away with doing a bunch of unrelated language/culture classes and still keep your credits. Hope this somewhat answers the question?

Oof my most embarrassing mistake is when I travelled to China. I was introducing myself to about a hundred students, and added that I loved cats. Unfortunately I used the wrong tone and said that I loved Mao Zedong.
