MBA in India vs MBA abroad. Which is better?
Sameer Kamat, founder of MBA Crystal Ball, covers all you need to know about the advantages, disadvantages, pros and cons of studying abroad in an international university vs studying in India.
He covers the differences in fees, salaries, costs, classmates, in 2-year MBA in India (like IIM) versus an MBA in USA, UK, Canada, Singapore, Europe. It'll help you decide whether CAT MBA is better than GMAT MBA for you.
And don't miss our non-diplomatic recommendation in the end.

Sir,
Can I get direct job after graduation in chemical engineering in Canada?
Because after 4-5 years of work experience I want an MBA degree in Canada.
Hi Rajvi, your question is a little unclear. Are you currently completing your engineering in India or in Canada? If you’re in India right now, it’ll be difficult to get a job in Canada (or any other country) unless you already have a network in that country.
Sir, I have completed my graduation in psychology (hons.) and want to pursue MBA in HR. I had HR as add on course duration my graduation.. Could it help me to get some good job..? In which field I should search for job please suggest.
I am currently preparing for MBA entrances but I am sure I won’t be able to crack it this year.
Please guide what should I do..
We don’t focus on CAT based Indian MBA programs. For international ones, you’ll need several years of work experience.
Sir , my dad have a business and I have an experience in this field of 5 years should I give gmat and do mba
@MBA Crystal Ball haha
If you’re happy managing your dad’s business, you may not need one. Unless your dad has threatened to replace you with an MBA grad.
What are yard sticks to find out quality of the M.B.A. school
How much must my score in GRE to get entry in a best Indian institute
Finally which institutions you recommend.
We’ve written this article on how to select the right business schools for your MBA: https://www.mbacrystalball.com/blog/2016/02/03/how-to-select-business-schools/
Sticking to the Financial Times Top 100 would be a good idea. Of course, higher being better in terms of credibility. But you’ll also have to consider costs, scholarships etc.
You shouldn’t pursue MBA to get a job. You should get a job first and then pursue MBA. An MBA without real experience is of hardly any use.
Even if you have the degree, doesn’t mean you know how to run a business.
BEING a manager and WORKING as a manager are two vastly different aspects.
Well said!
Dear Speaker, Thank you for sharing your valuable thoughts.
I am MBA Finance from VTU university India & working in Dubai. I’am really looking for a proper guidance & open talk regarding my confusions. As I work as an Accountant here, not really interested much in this field. I would like to work for Investment banking or other Finance filed rather then purely into accounts. Hence would like to seek your advice that, is there any relevant course I can do along side my job which has good scope and also will help me in terms of good pay scale back in Indiaother western countries?
Unfortunately short courses won’t have much relevance internationally. Which is why many candidates go for a full-time reputed degree in their target country.
Sir can you make a video on SP Jain’s MBA program.
We don’t focus on 2-year MBA programs, Kriti, assuming that’s what you’re referring to.
Im planning to do bba with aviaiton in bangalore so after that where should i do mba from abroad or india which one is the best cost wise and placement+salary wise
Work for a few years before considering an MBA.
Recommendation letter v should take from closely working colleague or top most CEO alumni of B school
An immediate manage who knows your work in detail would be better than choosing someone with an impressive designation who has no clue about your work. Read more here: https://www.mbacrystalball.com/blog/2011/10/16/dont-neglect-your-mba-letters-of-recommendation-lor/
thanks , great video , very helpful, i have one query do the prospects of MBA are bounded by the place we do it from, like a UK MBA won’t helpful in australia or USA and a USA MBA won’t be have good work prospects in other countries like uk ? or it more dependent on the global recognition of different b schools ? also can a MBA program have good career prospects in one particular country but not globally ?
The value of the degree will be highest in the host country that you study in. It drops when you take it into another country.
Hi Sir, I am so greatful for ur videos …I have a question I am giving my GRE in January last week what are the chances to apply in Canada as well as in US . Is it too late to apply ..what are the deadlines n all .I am very new to this process if you can guide me I would be really thankful
Yes, it’ll be late to start the application process after you get your score in January. You’ll be forced to apply in Round 3, which isn’t a good idea. Check out the official MBA websites to find the dates. Maybe you’ll find some that are still accepting international applications after Jan.
will mail you after getting 5 years experience
Your final verdict was really helpful.
Glad to hear that!
Sir, I’m an IT engineer. How do I get a management experience before MBA abroad?
@nikkkiddd I Feel you brother. i am in the same zone right now.
MBA Crystal Ball Because I don’t like the kind of work I’m doing right now and I would like to do something I enjoy doing as soon as possible ?
Why the urgency? The average experience in the MBA class would be around 5 years in most good programs.
MBA Crystal Ball I’m a recent graduate and I plan on doing an mba after two years. How do I get a management experience in this case?
Most IT companies have a hierarchy where employees with potential become team leads and then module or project managers. Those are considered managerial roles. A lot of IT engineers who work with us highlight that experience in their applications.
Articleship in Chartered accountancy course does count as work experience right?
We’ve covered the topic here: https://www.mbacrystalball.com/blog/2014/02/02/chartered-accountant-ca-articleship-experience/
I’m pursuing B.Sc (agri) from a good govt. college.. what can be my possibility to get into a good reputated B school related to agri bussiness managment? And which one should I choose between normal pgdm prog. or agri bussiness specific?
We don’t focus on the traditional Indian MBA programs, so we won’t be the right team to answer that.
Sir how good does the integrated mba in iim hold when compared to a bba and then mba
Can we directly do mba after graduation without work experience in iim
@MBA Crystal Ball thank u sir
We don’t focus on the 2-year MBA from IIMs, if that’s what you’re referring to. For GMAT MBA, work experience is mandatory for all good programs.
@MBA Crystal Ball thank u so much for ur spontaneous response… Is doing an mba from iim directly possible or after a degree or is work experience mandatory
We aren’t big fans of integrated programs. Best to go for a single degree that meets your expectations.
Still confused about whether you should go for an MBA in India or abroad? Paste your question below along with some profile details. We’d be happy to share some thoughts.
@chetan arora Depends on what you’re expecting from the degree. If it’s knowledge and skills, you’ll get it. If it’s a career change, that can be trickier.
@Sameer Kamat I am expecting carrer change. Will it be right decision?
@chetan arora We’ve seen folks over 30 managing a career change after MBA (I did it too), but as mentioned earlier it will not be a walk in the park. Make sure you understand the risks and rewards before taking the plunge.
@Sameer Kamat Sir, how can I prepare for GMAT in about 3 months time and what will be the ideal scores for get in a good B school
@chetan arora While we don’t help with test prep, we’ve shared several insights on the topic here: https://www.mbacrystalball.com/gmat/
